Covered California is once again giving consumers a bit of a break on the enrollment deadline for health coverage.
In what has become an annual tradition, the final deadline for enrollment has been extended by four days — for those who at least begin the process.
“Experience tells us that people wait until the last day to sign up for health insurance, and we do not want to leave anyone behind,” says Peter Lee, who heads the state Obamacare operation.
“We will help people get across the finish line in the days following the deadline, but you must take steps to begin the process by today,” Lee said.
Consumers who started an application need to complete it via a certified insurance agent, service center representative or community enrollment “partner.” To get help, call Covered California at (800) 300-1506. Service centers were open until midnight PST on the final official date for signups, Jan. 31.
Enrollments completed by Feb. 4 mean coverage under the Affordable Care Act would begin March 1.
Covered California officials have been trying to reassure the uninsured that signing up remains a wise course of action, despite President Trump’s intensifying war on Obamacare.
Enrollment has been running about the same as last year, Covered California said, based on figures through Jan. 24. This is the end of the fourth open-enrollment period for the state Obamacare operation.
Consumers who experience “qualifying life events” can sign up after open enrollment concludes.
