Covered California says it has provided healthcare insurance services to more than 2 million consumers since it began offering coverage in 2014.
The state Obamacare operation issued an “Active Member Profile” that categorizes its current 1.3 million current consumers based on ethnicity, age, income, region, county, ZIP code, carrier and metal tier.
Covered California also looked at the insurance buyers who walked away. Most gained new coverage via an employer, the state insurance study said. “Other consumers gained coverage through Medi-Cal; purchased a private plan outside of the exchange; or received health care coverage through another source, such as Medicare or a health exchange in another state.”
About 15 percent of those who halted their coverage became uninsured:
Most Californians who use the service do so because they receive government subsidies. The average consumer saves 70 percent off his or her monthly premium by using the state Obamacare operation.
Covered California also said:
- It had 1,307,155 actively enrolled consumers as of June 30, “slightly ahead of its projections for the end of fiscal year 2014-2015.”
- Special enrollments — exceptions to the open enrollment limitations due to life changes — are bringing in about 40,000 customers a month. The expectation was for 25,000 a month.
- Renewals for existing policies began Monday, Oct. 12.
Covered California’s open-enrollment period for new customers resumes Nov. 1 and continues through Jan. 31.
